in April this year, Hapag-Lloyd announced that it would become the first shipping company in the world to equip all its standard containers with real-time monitoring. Today, Hapag-Lloyd has officially begun installing real-time tracking equipment on its entire fleet of about 3 million twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) containers.

Hapag-Lloyd said the move was to help customers improve efficiency and transparency.

After the fleet installs tracking equipment, the "Internet of Things" (IoT) equipment will transmit real-time data, such as GPS-based location data, temperature measurement, and monitoring sudden vibrations.

Hapag-Lloyd Container Application Director Olaf Habert said, "We hope to build the world's most intelligent container fleet and provide our customers with valuable information."

for the plan, Hapag-Lloyd said it had cooperated with Nexxiot AG, a well-known trading technology company, and ORBCOMM provided equipment. Large-scale installation of tracking equipment is expected to begin by the end of this month.

Hapag-Lloyd first introduced a system in 2019 that can monitor its fleet of about 100,000 refrigerated containers in real time. The product, known as Hapag-Lloyd LIVE, is expected to be available to standard container customers at the beginning of 2023 and its entire dry cargo container fleet is expected to be tracked by the end of 2023.
