as congestion and equipment shortages ease, the Port of New York-New Jersey still handles more containers than ever. The transfer of goods is also continuing. Total throughput through the port in October was 792,548 TEU, marking the third consecutive month that New York-New Jersey overtook the Port of Los Angeles as the nation's busiest container port.

The New York-New Jersey port performed significantly better than California's two major hubs, Los Angeles and Long Beach, which have traditionally handled the largest standard container volume in the United States.

ANYNJ data shows that 2022 imports through September rose 10.4 percent compared with the same period last year to 3.768 million TEUs. In the first nine months of 2022, Los Angeles handled 3.98 million TEU imports, down 6% from the prior period. NEW YORK-Much of New Jersey's 2022 growth stems from importers shifting sales from the West Coast to East Coast and Gulf Coast destinations in long-running labor negotiations. PANYNJ said imports so far this year of about 600000 TEU are a result of the shift.

The port in September announced from next year to the ocean carrier to charge each long-term residence of the 100 U.S. dollars "container imbalance fee" details, the air sweep accelerated.

According to the latest data from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), ocean carriers have cleared 30,000 empty containers from the port since the peak in the summer. This has reduced the number of empty vessels inside and outside the port's terminals by 15 per cent from the July estimate of about 200000.

as the import slowdown frees up ship capacity, ocean carriers have been able to take out more empty ships. During August and September, the PANYNJ said 28 ships did not make regular trips to the port called New York-New Jersey. During the first two months, about 26 such vessels called New York-New Jersey.

The reduction in the number of empty loads at the New York-New Jersey Port Marine Terminal frees up space, equipment and labor to unload ships faster. The surge in freight for much of 2022 has resulted in as many as 30 ships having to berth outside ports, with some ships delayed by more than a month.

In addition to freeing up marine terminal space, fewer empty cars mean more off-dock warehouse space.

Long Beach Port's September throughput was 740000 TEUs, a slight decrease of 0.9 percent from the same period last year, while Los Angeles Port's year-on-year decline was 21.5 percent, and September throughput was 710000 TEUs.

Los Angeles executive director said: "Although 2022 may be a weak end, we are experiencing the second best first year in our history. "More importantly, we have worked together to almost eliminate the backlog of goods that began last year.
