as more bulk cargo is being shipped to Colonel Island in the Port of Brunswick, the Port of Georgia Authority's maritime terminal in Savannah handles more containers than ever before. Recently, the Georgia Port Authority (GPA) said it would build two post-Panamanian berths at the Savannah terminal, aiming to transform the traditional bulk cargo terminal into a more modern container facility.

berth construction will begin in early 2023, and the first berth is expected to be completed in early 2025. The second large berth at the marine terminal will be operational in 2026.

Since January this year, Savannah Port has moved 3.4 million standard containers, up 231400 or 7% from the 2021 record 5.6 million standard containers. The traffic volume in July made the annual traffic volume of Savannah Port exceed 6 million TEUs.

"The Port of Savannah has clearly become the preferred East Coast gateway for global shippers, including shipments moving from the west coast of the United States," GPA executive director Griff Lynch said. "Our accelerated infrastructure projects, extended boarding times and the excellent work of our employees and partners are key to moving our goods at record speeds."

Lynch pointed out that Savannah's container business is growing to flexibly meet the increasing capacity demand. GPA plans to increase annual berth capacity from 6 million to 7.5 million TEUs by next year and to 9 million TEUs by 2025.

GPA expects to spend $4.5 billion over the next 12 years to expand its container handling capacity. Current infrastructure projects include eight new ship-to-shore cranes, the first four to arrive in February and the next four to arrive by the end of 2023. In addition, another "big ship" berth at Garden City Pier has been completed by 60%, and the improvement plan will be launched in July 2023. The improved berth will increase the berth capacity of 1.4 million TEUs, while the Garden City West Wharf project will increase the container yard capacity of 1 million TEUs in phases in 2023 and 2024.

Kevin Price, President of Gateway Terminals, said: "Our partnership with GPA enables us to optimize the efficiency of the continuous flow of containers to foreign markets and the factories, distribution centers and retail stores that serve our economy." The huge demand for services at the Port of Georgia proves that the customer-centric driving force is at the core of all our efforts.

The container throughput of Savannah Port (Savannah) in 2021 was 5.6 million TEU, up 20% year-on-year, setting a record high for the port.

Since September 2021, Savannah has also increased its land-side capacity from 80,000 containers to 100,000 containers. When the garden city west plot in the garden city terminal is opened in stages starting next year, this number will increase by another 20%.

today's Savannah can handle three ships with more than 12,000 TEU at the same time. The reconstruction of Berth 1 of Garden City Pier will be completed by mid-2023, adding a fourth large ship berth; by 2026, two new marine terminal berths will be increased to six.
