ONE to build 10 13700TEU container ships

Japan Ocean Network Shipping (ONE) announced through its official website that it has ordered 10 13700TEU container ships to be delivered in 2025 and 2026.

ONE did not disclose shipyards and ship prices, but ONE said that after ordering 10 13000TEU container ships in May last year, this new order is also in line with the company's medium-term strategy announced in March 2022, that is, to strengthen its fleet competitiveness by ensuring stable deployment of the most advanced container ships to meet customers' needs to maintain an efficient and reliable supply chain.

It is worth mentioning that from the content of the draft, it is very likely that the ships will still use traditional fuel and be equipped with desulfurization towers and other energy-saving devices, because ONE only means that it will reserve and upgrade to methanol and ammonia fuel (ready for Methanol and Ammonia). At the same time, ONE also began to discuss with shipyards and equipment manufacturers the possibility of configuring shipborne carbon capture and storage equipment.

ONE chose traditional fuels because of its plan to deploy this series of ships on South America and other emerging market routes.

On March 10 this year, one of ONE's shareholders, Japan Post (NYK), released its medium-term strategy for 2026. Japan Post stressed that it supports and gives priority to the sustained growth of ONE, especially in emerging economies with great growth potential. The growth of developing countries' demand for general consumer goods will promote economic growth and even achieve long-term growth, thus expanding transportation demand. ONE must seize this opportunity.

At the same time, Japan Post also said it supports ONE in seeking strategic integration through mergers and acquisitions. This has further raised the market's expectations. Earlier, shipping analyst Lars Jensen pointed out at the TPM23 conference in Long Beach that HAPAG LLOYD and ONE would inevitably merge within two or three years after the shipping alliance was dissolved.

Lars Jensen said that many similarities between Hapraut and ONE will make the merger easier (do you believe that the two shipping giants will merge, analysts say? | the shipping world). Their strategies are similar to each other, the fleet operates in the same way, and they have similar views on how to treat customers. He pointed out that Hapag-Lloyd is the fifth largest liner company in the world, while ONE is the seventh largest liner company. The merged "Hapag-ONE" will be ranked fourth in the capacity list.

According to the latest Alphaliner data, ONE ranks 7th among the top 100 liner companies in the world, operating 204 ships with a total capacity of 1.5266 million TEU, including 90 owned ships and 114 chartered ships. Meanwhile, ONE holds orders for 31 new ships, about 433900 TEU.
