Maersk and SIPG signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation on the Shanghai Port Ship Methanol Fuel Project. The two sides also signed a joint venture agreement to establish an empty container transportation center in Shanghai.

On March 24, Maersk and SIPG signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation on the Shanghai Port Ship Methanol Fuel Project.


The two sides will cooperate to realize Maersk's methanol dual-power container ship under construction and the green methanol fuel port ship-ship filling operation after delivery in 2024.

SIPG Chairman Gu Jinshan, Maersk CEO Ke Wensheng, SIPG President Yan Jun, Maersk Asia Pacific President Bai Diller witnessed the signing. SIPG Marketing Director Huang Haidong, Maersk North Asia Chief Representative Yan, on behalf of the two sides signed a memorandum of cooperation.

Maersk said that it has set a target of net zero emissions for all businesses by 2040. To this end, the company has ordered 19 container ships that can use green methanol fuel. The delivery and operation of these ships can accelerate the realization of the shipping climate. Neutralization goals, and the establishment of green methanol port filling facilities is crucial to achieve this goal.

Maersk CEO Ke Wensheng said: "Working with global ports to build green fuel filling infrastructure is necessary to provide services to methanol ships. This is an important step in Maersk's efforts to lead the decarbonization of the end-to-end supply chain and have a meaningful impact on the environment within a decade."

Ke Wensheng further stated that Maersk is very happy to establish a partnership with SIPG, fully relying on its strong capabilities in filling services and port operations, and through joint efforts to provide customers with low-carbon logistics services. China will contribute to the goal of carbon neutrality in 2060.

He stressed: "We hope to form synergies with SIPG and fuel manufacturers to improve the efficiency of green fuel infrastructure."


As the world's leading container port operator, SIPG is committed to building a green ecological port. This cooperation will also support the development of Shanghai Port into the world's first green methanol commercial filling points and a regional green methanol fuel filling center.

Gu Jinshan, chairman of SIPG, said: "We are very happy to cooperate with Maersk to support it in achieving its shipping decarbonization goal. With the increase in demand for sustainable fuels, the provision of green fuel filling services will become another milestone for SIPG, which will help improve terminal services, enhance the competitiveness of Shanghai Port, and build a low-carbon and environmentally friendly energy hub port in the Asia-Pacific region. SIPG will continue to cooperate with major shipping companies to jointly promote the construction of Shanghai shipping hub portal and the green and low-carbon transformation of Shanghai shipping."

Maersk said that it will promote and deepen the scope and level of cooperation with SIPG in stages.

In the first phase of the, SIPG, as Maersk's potential energy filling service provider, carried out port ship-ship filling and port fuel tank storage services.

in the possible second stage, the two sides will discuss how to form a comprehensive energy strategic partnership and promote the extension from filling services to the upstream of the green methanol industry chain.


Maersk and SIPG also signed a joint venture agreement to set up an empty container transportation center in Shanghai to jointly build a regional container equipment hub. The proposed joint venture company must be approved by relevant government agencies.
