Forwardernet.com: Canada's New Calgary Facility Promoters Transshipment

Two private companies, Trealmont Transport and Kaptan US, will build a new transshipment facility in Calgary. The facility will open by the end of 2024 to handle sea cargo passing through Canada's western Port of Vancouver and Prince Rupert's Port.

transshipment facilities will be two-way, transferring imported goods to domestic containers and transferring exported goods from domestic containers to marine containers. This is the latest effort to transfer more international goods to domestic containers so that goods can be transported from inland Canada to the United States.

Calgary is the natural location of the new transshipment hub because of its railway connection, close to the Trans-Canada and CANAMEX Highway connecting major population centers, and close to the northern Alberta oil sands.

the project is a series of measures taken by CN and Canadian Pacific Railway to resolve the imbalance between domestic and international multimodal transportation compared with its US competitors. Dan Bresolin, CN's vice president of multimodal transport, said, "the facility will take advantage of CN's strong network and its two options for entering the Asian market through Vancouver and Prince Rupert, providing value to our customers and the regional economy and direct rail services to importers in central Canada and the Midwest of the United States and Canadian exporters."

Canada transshipment expansion

transshipment is already a booming business in California, Georgia, New Jersey, South Carolina and Texas, however, transshipment is slower in Canada. According to data from the North American Multimodal Transport Association IANA, in the first two months of 2023, more than 59% of all multimodal cargo from the southwestern United States and more than 56% of all multimodal cargo from the northeast were transported in domestic containers, while only 23% of cargo from western Canada.

The construction of the new Calgary project is the latest project to establish a logistics space for Canadian transshipment. It not only has a distribution center, but also well-known brands in the United States, such as Amazon, Home Depot, Rolls and Staples.

At the same time, CN is also carrying out a construction project in Milton, about 30 miles west of Toronto, to establish a major transshipment logistics hub, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Canada's transshipment facilities can be faster to remove goods from sea containers, so that goods imported to Vancouver and Prince Rupert Port can enter the hinterland of the United States, reach Memphis, Tennessee and other cities, and bundle sea containers for several weeks.
