The Canadian government has approved the Roberts Bank Pier 2 project (Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project).
Under the project, at British Columbia Delta Roberts Bank's existing port terminal near the Port of Vancouver (Vancouver), a new three-berth marine container terminal will be constructed.
The project is expected to provide an additional 2.4 million TEUs of container capacity, increasing Canada's West Coast container capacity by about 1/3.
According to a Vancouver Port (Vancouver) statement, the project will bring significant economic benefits, including more than 18000 jobs during construction, more than 17,300 ongoing jobs, an estimated annual GDP of $2.2 billion, and about $0.465 billion in taxes to support Canadians' services.
Port Authority Board Chair Judy Rogers commented: "The Roberts' Bank Pier 2 design ensures it aligns with our work to make the Port of Vancouver the world's most sustainable port, including protecting and enhancing the natural environment and reflecting Aboriginal priorities."
