According to the freight forwarding network, on April 26, Hyundai Merchant Marine in Seoul signed a memorandum of understanding with GS Caltex to ensure the safety of marine biofuels. Hyundai Merchant Shipping also plans to conduct fuel tests on its three 24000 TEU container ships in the second half of this year.
marine biofuels include 30% biodiesel extracted from waste cooking oil and 70% high sulfur fuel oil (HSFO). Biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 80% compared to conventional fuels. Biofuels have the advantage of requiring no technical modifications to be compatible with existing marine engines.
2021, Hyundai Merchant Marine conducted its first sea trials using biofuel on its 13100teu container ship. "HMM Dream", deployed in EC1 (East Coast 1) service connecting Asia and the East Coast of the United States, successfully completed its Pacific voyage.
Hyundai Merchant Senior Executive Vice President Park Jinki said: "Under this memorandum of understanding, we hope to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thus contribute to limiting climate change. We will continue to accelerate our research and development activities to improve our environmental capabilities."
