On May 4,, the Hapag-Lloiter website issued a notice stating that due to the lower-than-normal water level of Gatong Lake, a serious draft restriction was imposed on ships passing through the Panama Canal. As a result, the Panama Canal surcharge PCC(PANAMA CANAL CHARGE) will be levied on all cargo transported from East Asia to North America from June 1, 2023. Details of the charges are as follows:

Geography: East Asia to North America (EC1, EC2, EC6)

All types of containers: 500 USD

From East Asia: Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and Philippines

To North America: United States, Canada


Hapg-Lloth said that the low water level of Gatun Lake may bring challenges to customers' cargo planning, and the three east coast loops EC1, EC2 and EC6 are affected by this charge. Therefore, it is recommended to consider the EC4 and EC5 loop routes on the east coast, and the AA7 route on the Asia-USEC.

Maersk: Sudan customs system down,

affects container entry and exit ports★

On May 3,, the Maersk website issued a notice stating that the ongoing conflict in Sudan continues to wreak havoc on the daily lives of its citizens as well as commercial operations in the country. Maersk had previously issued a notice that had stopped accepting all bookings to Sudan until further notice. At present, although the port has been opened after the Eid holiday, Maersk reminded that Sudan's customs system has been paralyzed and closed, thus affecting the entry and exit of containers into and out of the port. It is expected to be resolved within the next 48-72 hours. Further information will be notified in time.
