MSC has recently acquired a second-hand ship.

MSC has recently acquired a second-hand ship.

Specifically, MSC bought a 6,672TEU MAERSK KIEL from Maersk, which has now been delivered and has been renamed MSC GIOVANNA VII.

The ship by the Japanese IHI shipyard shipyard built in 1998, that is, the ship is now a ship over 25 years old old ship!

From this transaction, we also see that the current world's largest container company and the world's second largest container company in the strategic significant differences, Maersk sold the round is obviously to further update the fleet.

And MSC in the freight market fell sharply, the shipping industry green transformation in full swing at the moment in order to expand capacity is still a large number of purchases of old second-hand ships, it can be seen that its capacity urgent expansion of hope.

Shipping consulting company Alphaliner said that the MAERSK KIEL series of ships has a total of 4 ships, and its other three sister ships are MAERSK KALMAR, MAERSK KARACHI and MAERSK KIMI. At present, these three ships are still under Maersk's control, but they are expected to be sold to MSC soon.

MSC will be the world's first capacity

Breakthrough 5 million TEU's Container Transportation Company

Alphaliner said that as of May 18, MSC's fleet of 753 vessels had a capacity of 4,956,720 TEUs.

According to Alphaliner data, since August 2020, MSC has purchased a fleet of 306 container ships with a capacity of 1.2 million TEUs.

In the next few weeks in May, the 24100TEU container ship "MSC GEMMA" built by Shanghai East China and the third 24000TEU class "MSC Michel Cappelini" built by Yangtze River Shipping Industry will soon be delivered, when Mediterranean Shipping's capacity will exceed 5 million TEU.

According to Alphaliner data, MSC currently controls 753 ships (including owned and leased), with a total capacity of 4,956,720TEU. There is only 43280TEU from 5 million TEU!

And immediately MSC will also receive an MSC MICHEL CAPPELLINI ship from Yangtze River Shipping Industry and another MSC GEMMA ship from China Shipping Group. The maximum container capacity of these two ships has reached 24000TEU.

This means that MSC may as soon as the end of this month its total capacity will exceed 5 million TEU.

Will soon break through 6 million TEU

MSC's Future Situation

Some industry insiders commented that the Aponte family led the shipping company did not relax its dominant global trade routes of desire.

"MSC's growth ambitions will not stop and the Geneva-based shipping company's fleet will reach 6 million TEUs by the middle of next year."

127 new ships to be delivered

5 million TEU is also not MSC's focus, as the company has 127 vessels with a total capacity of 1.66 million TEU of new ship orders, so Alphaliner expect the company to further increase capacity to 6 million TEU in 2024.

If MSC continues its strategy of extending the life of older vessels, by 2025 its capacity could climb to around 6.75 million TEUs.

"MSC expects to handle a large number of aging ships below 8,000 TEU in the next few years in order to improve fuel efficiency and gradually transition to alternative fuels." Some industry people said.

From 2M alliance, MSC or "self-reliance"?

The 2M alliance with Maersk will officially expire in early 2025, and MSC is seen as having an independent operation outside the main alliance, as it has previously indicated.

"Unlike most of the other shipping companies in the top 10, MSC's large fleet size will enable carriers to offer attractive shipping services on all major trade routes without having to join another alliance." Nevertheless, Alphaliner estimate that MSC will be on some routes to select smaller-scale partnerships.

Alphaliner added: "When Maersk's 2M ship sharing agreement expires, MSC will be able to operate a global independent route network."

CMA CGM followed

Meanwhile, French shipping company CMA CGM works for container ship brokers who are also the market's busiest.

Alphaliner said: "Since the start of the year, CMA CGM has been by far the most active charterer, having signed up to 120 vessels, including extensions and new deals."

"This is definitely one of the most aggressive liner companies right now and is not afraid of long-term contracts." A shipbroker said.

CMA CGM currently has 621 vessels with a capacity of 3.5 million TEUs, and also has a huge order of close to 1 million TEUs. The company is reported to be in talks with Asian shipyards about 10 more 24,000 TEU vessels, which, if confirmed, could see CMA CGM overtake Maersk as the world's second-largest shipping company.

Alphaliner said: "The rumored order will see CMA CGM's newbuilding capacity jump from 910000 TEU to 1.15 million TEU, which directly puts the carrier's capacity ahead of Maersk."
