Freight forwarding network: CPKC adds new refrigerated containers for Mexico-US services

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) will add 1000 new temperature-controlled intermodal containers to its Mexico network to support the recently opened daily train from Central Mexico to Chicago, hoping to capture some of the business that now passes trucks across the border.

CPKC Bulk and Multimodal Sales and Marketing Senior Vice President Jonathan Wahba said that the expansion of our state-of-the-art refrigeration equipment will provide more customers with the necessary solutions to convert to rail.

The containers, which will double CPKC's refrigerated fleet, will be used to support fresh and frozen produce, baked goods, confectionery and other foods from Mexico to the United States, and from the United States to Mexico for beef, chicken and pork.

CPKC's new May 11 Mexico-to-Chicago train, called the Mexico Midwest Express (MMX), will stop at San Luis Potosi, Montreal, Kansas City and Chicago. The main partners of the service are Schneider National and Swift Intermodal.

In theory, many shippers can use refrigerated containers on the Mexico to Chicago train, which runs from San Luis Potosi in 4.5 days.

Mondelez International (Mondelez International) has a large presence in Mexico and ships confectionery products to the United States. Thousands of agricultural products are also shipped from Mexico to the U.S. Midwest each week, though most of those shipments are trucked on highways.

multimodal transport competition

While CPKC wants to convert freight to rail, it also faces stiff intermodal competition to win business.

Union Pacific Railroad said it will begin offering direct multimodal service from the Port of Houston on June 1, expanding Houston's accessible discretionary cargo markets to include those near U.S. West Coast ports.

UP's current schedule information shows a five-day transit time from the Barbours Cut to the Long Beach Intermodal Ramp. Transportation to Salt Lake City is seven days, while its Denver service offers nine-day transit from Houston. Kari Kirchhoefer, senior vice president of UP, said the new terminal terminal service provides additional routing options for major metropolitan markets while helping customers improve efficiency.

large intermodal suppliers such as Hub Group and J. B. Hunt Transport Services have temperature-controlled containers capable of handling refrigerated operations. Other experts, such as C.R. England, Prime Inc. NFI, and Tiger Cool Express also have temperature-controlled containers.

None of these companies partnered with CPKC, instead using BNSF Railroad or Union Pacific Railroad, which required a transfer from Texas South to CPKC.
