Recently, Container News collated 2022 container traffic data and listed last year Europe's top 10 busiest container ports.
Europe's Top 10 Container Ports
The Dutch port of Rotterdam (Rotterdam) continues to maintain Europe's largest container port, with a throughput of 14.4 million TEU in 2022, down 5.5 per cent.
Meanwhile, the Port of Rotterdam's financial performance improved, with revenue up 6.9 per cent year-on-year to $0.876 billion and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) up 6.1 per cent to $0.576 billion, but net income remained unchanged at $0.2623 billion.
In second place is Belgium's Antwerp-Bruges port (Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium),2022 container throughput of 13.5 million TEUs, down 5.2 per cent;
It is worth noting that the Belgian Antwerp and Zeebrugge two ports in April 2022 to complete the merger, Antwerp-Bruges port officially began operations.
Germany Hamburg Port (Hamburg) to 8.3 million TEU container throughput ranked third, the annual throughput decreased by 5.1;
The gap between imports and exports in the Port of Hamburg,, is smaller. 4.2 million imported TEUs and 4.1 million exported, down 6.1 and 4.1 percent respectively
Also worth noting is that the Port of Hamburg and COSCO recently reached a final agreement to acquire a minority stake in Futian Container Terminals Ltd. (CTT), which in the German government caused some of China's port industry impact concerns.
Ranked fourth is Spain's Port of Valencia (Valencia),2022 Valencia handled a total of 5.1 million TEUs, down 9.4 percent
The Greek port of Piraeus (Piraeus) handled 5 million TEUs in 2022, a year-on-year decline of 6%, but still maintained its European container port ranking of fifth.
On the other hand, the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) last year's financial results improved and its turnover increased by 26.2 percent to 0.208 billion billion dollars.
Notably, back in 2016, COSCO acquired a majority stake in the Greek port, which in recent years has seen tremendous growth.
In sixth place was the Spanish port of Algeciras (Algeciras), which handled 4.8 million TEUs in 2022, a slight decrease of 0.8 per cent compared to the previous year's throughput.
The port of Bremen (Bremerhaven), Germany, fell by 8.9 per cent in container throughput last year and fell to seventh place. The throughput of the port of Bremen in 2022 is 4.6 million TEUs.
Ranked eighth is Spain's Barcelona Port (Barcelona),2022 handled 3.5 million TEUs, compared with 2021, Barcelona last year's container throughput is relatively stable.
The Italian port of Gioia Tauro (Gioia Tauro) ranks ninth with 3.4 million TEU throughput and is also the first port on the list to achieve year-on-year container growth, up 7.1 percent
The port of HAROPA, a French port complex including Le Havre, Rouen and Paris, ranked 10th, handling a total of 3.1 million TEU of cargo in 2022, up 1%.
