Europe's two largest container shipping portals, in order to increase port throughput and make port operations more digital and automated, are making a series of capacity and technology investments.

The Antwerp-Bruges port has more than 300000 shipping events per year, and in order to continuously monitor ship traffic on the more than 120 square kilometers and 11000 hectares of docks and waterways, the Antwerp-Bruges hub has activated an extensive digital radar and camera network to manage its huge shipping traffic.

the port handled a total of 13.5 million TEUs last year, it will increase its throughput by 7.2 million TEUs by the end of the decade as the terminal operates at full capacity. Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said that the economic impact of container shipping has always been high, and early investment in the construction of new terminal walls can better meet and provide customers with the necessary capacity.

, one of the main terminals in the nearby port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands will expand its full automation capacity and hinterland connectivity to carry more containers. The throughput of Rotterdam Port in 2022 is 14.45 million TEUs. It is estimated that by 2035, Rotterdam Port will need to increase the throughput of 8 million TEUs. Castelein adds that in the coming decades container traffic will continue to grow… Rotterdam aims to promote and encourage this growth in a sustainable way. "

To increase the required additional space, fully automated Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) is investing $0.5 billion to expand its Prinses Amaliahaven terminal in the port's Maasvlakte area.

RWG's investment will cover civil works, quay cranes, storage modules with automatic stacking cranes and electric automatic guided vehicles. Once completed, the dock will be able to provide shore power to berthed ships, while sensors mounted on the dock wall will measure the forces that ships, waves, wind and other elements exert on the structure.

The expansion will add 10000 TEUs to RWG's capacity, which will be fully automated and carbon neutral, with the first phase expected to be operational by the end of August.
