Freight Forwarder Network: Duisburg Terminal Expands PSA Business to Europe

07月06日 12:48:50

PSA International has agreed to acquire a 22 percent stake in Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT), a facility under construction at the world's largest inland port, as the port operator expands its European network into the hinterland. A minority stake in DGT will see the port operator join other shareholders Hupac,HTS Group and duisport in developing the terminal.

Duisburg, located on the Rhine River in southern Germany, handled 40000 TEUs in 2022, down 7% from the previous year. But inland terminals are an important transshipment point for ships and barges, as well as trucks and rail shipments of goods from deep-sea hubs such as Antwerp and Rotterdam, where 95 per cent of rail transport in Europe takes place via the Northern Corridor.

The terminal construction of the DGT three-way transport is proceeding as planned, with the first phase scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2024. Upon completion, DGT will be the largest container terminal in the hinterland of Europe, covering an area of 235000 square meters.

Duisburg Port Group CEO Markus Bangen said that this network expansion will help further strengthen Duisburg Port's competitive diversity and diversification.

Singapore-based PSA already has a sizeable European presence, with terminals in Belgium, Italy, Portugal and Poland as well as Turkey, but PSA's acquisition is subject to German competition authority approval.

PSA Group CEO Tan Chong Meng said that the Duisburg terminal, as part of Europe's largest and most sustainable inland port, will become a key gateway to Germany's dense industrial hinterland for green logistics services.

Tan added that PSA will be able to leverage its significant global port and supply chain network, as well as its continental European presence, to support Germany's green energy transition and enable more resilient and sustainable trade.
