On August 24, the General Administration of Customs issued Announcement 2023 No. 103 (on the total suspension of the import of Japanese aquatic products announcement).


The announcement reads as follows:

In order to comprehensively prevent the radioactive pollution risk caused by the discharge of nuclear contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan, to protect the health of Chinese consumers, and to ensure the safety of imported food, in accordance with the the People's Republic of China Food Safety Law and its implementing regulations, the the People's Republic of China Import and Export Food Safety Management Measures, and the World Trade Organization's Agreement on the Implementation of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, the General Administration of Customs has decided to suspend the import of aquatic products (including edible aquatic animals) originating in Japan from August 24, 2023 (inclusive).

In response to a reporter's question on the discharge of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water from Japan, the head of the Import and Export Food Safety Bureau of the General Administration of Customs said that the Japanese government ignored the strong doubts and opposition of the international community and unilaterally forcibly started the discharge of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water on August 24. China Customs is highly concerned about the risk of radioactive contamination of Japanese food and agricultural products exported to China. In order to prevent the export of radioactive contaminated Japanese food to China and protect the lives and health of the people, the General Administration of Customs continues to carry out an assessment of the risk of radioactive contamination of Japanese food. On the basis of strictly ensuring safety, it has taken strengthened regulatory measures for food imported from Japan.

The person in charge said that the General Administration of Customs will continue to pay attention to Japan's nuclear pollution water discharge situation, depending on the situation dynamic adjustment of relevant regulatory measures to prevent nuclear pollution water discharge on our national health, food safety risks.
