A 32% raise! West US dockers sign six-year contract

Recently, the International Terminal and Warehouse Union (ILWU) said that the dock workers voted to approve a six-year contract with the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), and the West Coast finally got rid of the strike threat.

the contract, effective July 1, 2022, increases wages and benefits for 22000 employees at 29 ports in the U.S. and West, including the busiest port, Long Beach/Los Angeles, including a 32 percent pay increase over the life of the contract and a one-time bonus for working in the early stages of the new coronary pneumonia epidemic.
"The negotiations for this contract have been protracted and challenging," Willie Adams, international president of
ILWU, said in a statement."
"I am grateful... for those who have supported giving ILWU and PMA the space they need to achieve this result." The ILWU union and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), which represents employers such as shipping company terminals, reached a tentative contract agreement in June. That capped 13 months of negotiations and eased concerns that disruptions at U. S.-West-related ports could affect the all-important retail holiday shipping season.

the uncertainty was exacerbated by the prolonged negotiations, and the Port of the West lost some of its business throughput in competition with the ports of the East and the Gulf of America. PMA chief executive Jim McKenna said the new contract provides a framework for "overcoming new competitive challenges".

Ratification of the agreement should result in the return of goods to the US-West that have been diverted to the US-East and US-Gulf Freedoms in lengthy negotiations. Shippers have previously moved more and more discretionary cargoes out of the US-West to avoid the frequent work practices of dock workers causing disruption.
