CMA CGM and Maersk have both set ambitious net zero targets and are making significant investments in shipping's energy transition.

Two leading shipping companies will work together to develop alternative green fuels for container ship propulsion.

Maersk and CMA CGM confirmed their willingness to work with regulatory stakeholders to ensure the industry's decarbonization.

Maersk and CMA CGM have decided, in full compliance with all laws and regulations, to join forces in several areas related to decarbonization.

As shipping energy transition leaders, both companies believe that joint action will help accelerate shipping's green transformation, learn from each other and go further and faster.

CMA CGM and Maersk have set net-zero targets for their shipping businesses, have identified scalable solutions that can make an impact this decade, and have each taken ambitious paths to promote shipping decarbonization.

Maersk has been ordering vessels that can operate with bio/e-methanol.

CMA CGM has been ordering LNG-propelled ships that can also operate on bio/e-methane (the current LNG's new green equivalent), and has also ordered ships that can operate on bio/e-methanol.

Although these two fuel streams now appear to be the most mature of the existing solutions, both companies expect that future shipping fuel portfolios will include other fuel streams that should be developed in the next few years.

Ambitious collaboration to develop fuel future for shipping industry

Specifically, the two shipping companies will work more together to develop the use of alternative green fuels for container ship propulsion, namely:

Set high standards for alternative sustainable green fuels, including full life cycle and related greenhouse gas analysis, and help establish a large-scale production of green methane and green methanol framework.

Develop and maintain green methanol vessels in safety and bunkering operational standards, and accelerate port preparation in major global ports for bunkering and supply of bio/e-methanol.

Continue to jointly explore other components of net-zero solutions as new alternative fuels, such as ammonia, or our ship's innovative technologies.

Two Leading Shipping Companies Jointly Drive Industry Energy Transition Advocacy

In addition, both Maersk and CMA-CGM agree on the fundamental role of regulation in ensuring the decarbonization of the sector. Both companies warmly welcomed the recent outcomes of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee, which adopted the IMO 2023 strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships and strengthened targets to address harmful emissions.

Maersk and CMA CGM remain committed to working together to advocate for and encourage IMO Member States to take ambitious measures in pursuit of the highest achievable goals. Both companies welcomed regional measures such as the EU 55 and the Inflation Reduction Act to help stimulate demand for green shipping solutions.

CMA CGM and Maersk confirmed their willingness to work with regulatory stakeholders to establish a strong and sustainable international regulatory GHG framework and invited other international shipping companies wishing to join their collaboration with the regulator. In our company's view, such a framework is a prerequisite for reducing carbon emissions from the shipping industry and ensuring a level playing field for global business. "

Dafei Group Chairman and CEO Rudolf Saad Rodolphe Saadé said: "This partnership is a milestone in the decarbonization of our industry. By combining the expertise and expertise of both shipping leaders, we will accelerate the development of new solutions and technologies that will enable our industry to meet its CO2 reduction targets. We look forward to other companies joining us.

Maersk CEO Vincent Clerk Vincent Clerc also said that Maersk wants to accelerate the green transformation of shipping and logistics, for which we need the strong participation of partners across the industry. We are pleased to have allies in CMA CGM, which proves that when we are united through determined efforts and partnerships, a tangible and optimistic path to a sustainable future emerges. "
