Freight forwarding network: Indian container ports hit by hurricane disruption, tight capacity

As severe tropical storm "Bipachoi" (Biparjoy) is moving towards India's northwest corridor, Gujarat coastal all Indian ports have ceased operations until further notice.

In the busy trade corridor, with port capacity severely strained, India's west coast airlines are dealing with major service reliability challenges.

India's container trade is about to face more supply chain disruptions as storm "Bipachoy" Biparjoy, which is expected to make landfall on Thursday, has now forced all ports along the Gujarat coastline to close, including Mundra,Pipavav and Hazira.

The Nhava Sheva (JNPT) berth was decommissioned in February and continued to upgrade its berth equipment until the end of August. In the past two weeks, due to extreme weather, the Pipavav APM terminal was forced to close its operations, which prompted large-scale cargo diversion to Mundra, putting the carrier's service reliability at considerable risk, which increased the existing supply chain pressure.

due to space constraints, the train at Mundra has turned abnormally, affecting the flow of goods in and out of there. Mondra Port, as another container gateway, has been struggling to cope with additional ship calls and significant imports and exports diverted from other locations. However, due to the expected arrival of the tropical storm, the port of Mondra has suspended the berthing of ships and plans to transfer all ships at anchor to evacuate the berth.

Throughout the port, already berthed ships have been diverted from the docks, and the expected Thursday landfall of Cyclone Bipachoy has forced all ports along the Gujarat coastline to close, including Mundra, Pipavif and Hazra.

The Port of Adani,, said all existing vessels moored at anchorage would go to the high seas. No vessel shall berth or drift within the limits of Mondra harbor until further instructions. To ensure the safety of port equipment, the supply chain of India's container trade will face more disruptions. Maersk has said four scheduled voyages at Mundra this week will be affected.

Mondra's a ship agent pointed out that with large ships piling up inevitability, when the port reopens, already on the ground containers will dramatically increase.

the port authority said that the activities of vessels other than container ships will continue to be piloted by tugboats for boarding until weather permits. Mondra and Navasheva ports together handle about 65% of India's container trade. "The current situation at the port is very volatile," the Container Shipping Association (India) said.
