Long Beach Port,, July Container Throughput Drops

The saw a sharp drop in container throughput at the Port of Long Beach in July due to high retailers' inventories, a shift in consumer spending towards travel, entertainment and other experiences, and a shift in cargo to the US East and US Bay ports.
The container throughput of the Port of Long Beach,,, was 578200 TEU in July this year, down 26.4 per cent from a year earlier, down 3.2 per cent from the previous month and down 23.7 per cent from the 758000 TEU in May. Among them, imported heavy boxes decreased by 27.9 to 271100 TEU and exported heavy boxes decreased by 17.6 to 90100 TEU. In addition, the number of empty containers passing through the Port of Long Beach fell 27.7 percent to 217000 TEUs.

In the first seven months of 2023, the Port of Long Beach handled 4.3109 million TEU of containers, down 25.6 percent year-over-year. Container throughput is now close to pre-epidemic levels, with the Port of Long Beach handling 4.3 million TEU in the first seven months of 2019.
Long Beach Port of CEO Mario Cordero said, "I believe that as we work with industry partners to rebuild market share, the Port of Long Beach's container throughput will improve. Looking ahead to the near term, we expect a mild 'peak season' in shipping as consumers spend less on back-to-school supplies and gifts during the holiday season this year."
