Mexican Transport Organization Union (AMOTAC) members revealed that Mexico's national cargo truck drivers plan on Tuesday (29) and Wednesday (30) to hold large-scale strikes and protests.
It is understood that the two-day strike may include up to 300000 truck drivers. The strike was originally scheduled to start at 8 am on Tuesday. It is expected that the main highway will be blocked, which may disrupt the country's domestic and international freight.
AMOTAC says it represents more than 75 percent of the country's commercial freight, tourism and bus passenger fleet.
AMOTAC said in a press release: "We regret the inconvenience and traffic that may be caused on the national highway, but because the authorities have our sector's lack of interest and commitment, forced us to take these actions, they forgot about our transportation industry through the development of necessary goods."
"We are a job-creating industry that also brings very important economic benefits to the country."
AMOTAC officials say the danger of cargo thieves is one of Mexico's main problems.
AMOTAC spokesman Valentin Romero Trujillo said: "Every day we are subjected to attacks, robberies and murders from road transporters and drivers, while the National Guard commander has not ordered the necessary action to stop this."
Data show that from January to July, Mexican cargo theft cases totaled 5,470, an increase of 10%
"Cargo theft is one problem and violence is another big problem."
"Cargo insurance rates have been going up, up, up."
