The Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) has joined the cross-industry Silk Alliance initiative, which aims to expand the Green Shipping Corridor to achieve zero emissions shipping in Asia, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

Lloyd's Register CEO Nick Brown said that global maritime industry participants and Singapore's port regulator between the deeper public-private sector cooperation, will open the Indian Ocean and Pacific region of key investment.

Singapore as a refueling and transshipment center, in order to accelerate the process of carbon reduction in Singapore's maritime sector, the Maritime and Port Authority signed a memorandum of understanding with the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach in April this year to establish Singapore's second green and digital shipping corridor. The corridor will link the Port of Singapore with the Port of San Pedro Bay.

MPA CEO Teo Eng Dih said that last year Singapore sold 140000 metric tons of marine blended biofuel, more than liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel, and the inclusion of the Port Authority in the Silk Alliance will enable Singapore's major maritime organizations to step up decarbonization efforts and plan for the transition to low-carbon and zero-carbon options.

New Gabe is an important node in the trans-Pacific waterway and a key stakeholder in the green transformation of the maritime industry. Singapore will take active measures to support the decarbonization of container trade, in line with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) revised strategy to reduce shipping emissions. "

Nick Brown added that flag States and port authorities play a vital role in increasing industry confidence in zero-emission shipping, and as the world's largest bunkering hub, we believe this collaboration will be a driving force for the global shipping industry to safely adopt low-to-zero-emission fuels. "

Cross Shipping Value Chain Partners

The Silk Alliance brings together the entire shipping value chain of private and public sector organizations, including founding member port operator PSA; ship management; carriers Pacific International Shipping Company, Wanhai Shipping Company, X-Press Feeders and Yangming Shipping Company; shipyard Seatrium; engine manufacturer Wärtsilä;Wilhelmsen Ship Management Company, Asian Development Bank and ING Group.

the alliance's initial focus will be on decarbonizing the baseline fleet, which is refueled mainly in Singapore and sailed in Asia, East Africa, the Middle East, Australia and the Pacific Islands. With the roll-out of the implementation phase, the baseline fleet demand is expected to expand to other regional hubs and deep sea routes, such as the Singapore-Rotterdam Green Digital Shipping Corridor.

In August last year, Singapore and Rotterdam agreed in the port between the establishment of the world's longest green and digital shipping corridor transport, to explore the two city port cargo ships using biodiesel, methanol, ammonia and hydrogen and other low-carbon or zero emission energy possibility, is expected to 2027, the first batch of sustainable ships will be in the Asia-Northern Europe route deployment.
